BLUEBIRD NORTH – TORONTO, ON – NOVEMBER 19
The Songwriters Association of Canada hosts an event called Bluebird North named after The Bluebird, a famous club in Nashville where songwriters sing in the round showing off their songs. At Bluebird North a group of songwriters take turns showing off their songs but instead of singing in a hole in the wall club here we get to do it in the lovely hoity toity Royal Conservatory of Music. Pretty swank if you ask me.

Oh Susanna on Canada Live!

Way back in June, Matthew Barber and I played to a too drunk but happy crowd at the Palomino Bar in Calgary. The soundman Bill decided to come up on stage in between the first 3 or 4 songs and complain to Burke, my pedal steel player, in full voice about how Burke’s amplifier volume had changed and how he should adjust it. Their conversations grew so long that I had to interrupt them by starting the next song on the set list – in effect trying to shoo Bill away. Meanwhile, my guitar is feeding back and so I would say,” Bill could you please turn down my guitar?” But he never would. So finally on the third time of asking the audience chimed in “BILL BILL BILL!” Matthew tried to calm the audience down for fear that Bill would retaliate by shutting off the PA altogether. So I must admit that between the drunken crowd and the whacky soundman I had quite a bit of swagger that night. The CBC had to chop out quite of bit of my off-colour commentary. So they made the show sound quite good in spite of the circumstances. Clink the link here to listen now.

Oh Susanna’s “Soon The Birds” (Continental Song City, ***) is Canadian sonstrel Suzie Ungerleider’s fifth album. Her country folk is often compared to Gillian Welch, and not least because songs such as “By Rope” and “Pretty Blue Eyes” transport the listener to a distant, unknown world and then bring them back feeling like they’ve lived another life.

OH SUSANNA “Soon The Birds” (Continental Song City / Munich / V2)

Vier lange jaren zaten er vervat tussen het verschijnen van haar laatste, het met een Juno genomineerde “Short Stories” uit 2007, en “Soon The Birds”, de nieuwe van Suzie Ungerleider. Als Oh Susanna doet de Canadese daarop nochtans gewoon verder datgene, waar ze al tijden zo verdomd goed in blijkt. En dat is, als je het ons vraagt, het brengen van prima roots music met een net wat radiovriendelijker kantje dan die van het gros van de concurrentie. Ditmaal gebeurde dat aan het handje van de ondermeer om zijn werk met de Wailin’ Jennys en het duo Manx en Breit geprezen lokale producer David Travers-Smith. Onder diens toeziende oog werd er eigenlijk maar weinig veranderd aan wat in het verleden voor Ungerleider al een winnende formule bleek. Ergens halverwege traditionele country en folk wist de getalenteerde brunette ook ditmaal weer een elftal bijzonder aangenaam wegluisterende liedjes voor ons samen te harken. Herfstig weemoedig aandoende pedal-steelklanken en met al even veel omzichtigheid neergelegde zachte gitaarwolkjes bepalen daarin grotendeels de klankkleur. En natuurlijk ook de prachtige stem van La Ungerleider zelve. Die heeft van het klaaglijke karakter daarvan ondertussen zo’n beetje haar handelsmerk gemaakt. En let vooral ook even op de hemelse harmony vocals van Ruth Moody! A perfect match gewoon, die twee! Met als absolute stand-outs “this time around” wat ons betreft het door collega Burke Carroll van wat fraai Weissenborn-werk voorziene “Millions Of Rivers”, het snarengewijs old-time ademende “By Rope”, het ongemeen relaxte “Drunk As A Sailor” en de mooie ingetogen roots rock van “Your Town”.
